You Are My Sunshine and the Apple of My Eye (London, 2024)
Clay, Glaze, Gold Lustre
D44 x H55 cm
You Are My Sunshine and the Apple of My Eye began as a detailed, fragile sculpture crafted with a sun-like textured glaze radiating warmth. During the glaze firing, chaos struck—the form collapsed, rolled in the kiln, and caused explosions, leaving fragments and fused pieces in its wake. Miraculously, the circular core survived, while all intricate details were obliterated. Embracing its unexpected transformation, I crowned the piece with 24-karat gold luster, honoring its new form.
You Are My Sunshine and the Apple of My Eye is about rebellion, loss, and discovery. It’s a story of imperfections, happy accidents, and the way things can fall apart only to come together in new, meaningful ways. It is a symbol of hope: a sun, an apple, a survivor.
